Video Glossary

What is Bitrate?

The amount of data used to encode a second of video or audio, usually measured in kilobits per second (kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps).

What is it?

Bitrate refers to the speed at which data is processed or transferred. In video, it determines the quality and file size. Higher bitrate means better quality but larger files.

Why it matters

Choosing the right bitrate is a balance. If it's too low, your video will look blocky (pixelated). If it's too high, your file will be huge and hard to share.

How to use it

For 1080p video uploads to YouTube, a bitrate of 8-12 Mbps is standard. For 4K, you'll want 35-45 Mbps.
